Big trucks and SUVs are among the most appealing to car thieves. In the past few years, big, bold SUVs have become almost synonymous with the success of entertainment and sports stars. You make it big, you buy an Escalade. Or a Hummer.

Hopefully, there's money left over to hire a full-time driver who can watch over the car, because these two vehicles are among the most likely to be stolen.

The 2007 Cadillac Escalade ESV, a full-size luxury SUV, has the highest theft-claim frequency of any vehicle by a long shot. It's 15 times more likely to end up in the hands of thieves than the least-stolen car, the luxurious Mercedes E Class sedan, according to the theft-claim frequency report for 2005-07 model year cars, SUVs and light trucks, produced by the Highway Loss Data Institute (an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The E Class, Buick Rainer and Subaru Forester have the lowest theft-claim frequency reports.

"The Escalade has been the star of the show with car thieves for the better part of the decade," says Russ Rader, an IIHS spokesperson. "It has pop-culture appeal, and thieves are attracted to it."

While the Escalade is the most coveted among thieves, the Hummer H2 and the Hummer H2 SUT (a sport utility truck with a small pickup bed in the rear compartment), are also highly desirable--and among the top 10 vehicles with the highest theft claim frequencies. Given a choice between a Hummer and a small car like the Ford Focus or a wagon like the Volvo V70, a thief is eight times more likely to go for the SUV.

Behind the Numbers

To generate lists of the most- and least-stolen cars, the IIHS annually reviews insurance-claim reports to determine theft-frequency rates based on the number of claims filed for every 1,000 vehicles insured each year. The 2008 report, released in October, only includes 2005, 2006 and 2007 model-year cars, light trucks and SUVs, with the exception of the Cadillac Escalades (only the 2007 model is included because it was redesigned for that model year) and the Dodge Charger (only the 2006 and 2007 models are included since it was not available in the 2005 model year). Based on the claims filed, the IIHS also calculates the average loss payment--the amount paid to the consumer by the insurance company--made for each claim filed. Although there are plenty of sedans and smaller models that are attractive to thieves, most of the vehicles comprising the list of the top 10 most-stolen cars are big trucks and SUVs.

There are many reasons why thieves choose popular, large vehicles over everyday family cars, but one is accessibility, says Rader. "If you've got a typical family sedan ... it is most likely spending the night in a suburban garage."

Desirability, however, is a big factor. The Escalade (11.3 claims per 1,000) and its slightly larger sibling, the Escalade ESV, are likely popular among thieves, says Rader, for the cars' expensive parts and accessories. Escalade owners are known to add premium audio equipment, flashy rims, extra chrome and interior accessories as well. That might explain why the average claim loss paid for a stolen Escalade is $14,657 and $13,060 for the ESV. The average loss payment, across all vehicles, is only $9,396.

Thieves are also attracted to a vehicle's cargo. The Ford F-250 and F-350 SuperCrew pickups have open beds that may include expensive equipment or tools that are just as appealing to thieves as the truck itself. The average loss payment claim for these vehicles are among the highest ($19,250 and $20,138, respectively), which may also include claims for whatever equipment or cargo these trucks may have been holding at the time they were stolen.

Adding Deterrents

Cadillac recognizes that the appeal to thieves "is an unfortunate side effect of the desirability" of the Escalade, but says it is doing its part to make the vehicle harder to steal, according to a Cadillac spokesperson. For the 2009 model year, Cadillac added a theft-deterrent feature through General Motors' General Motors OnStar communication system. When an Escalade or Hummer is reported stolen, OnStar will remotely shut off the vehicle's power, making it virtually impossible for anyone to drive it.

But reporting a vehicle stolen needs to happen quickly, since a thief wants to offload it quickly--either whole or as parts. The Insurance Information Institute, a nonprofit organization, estimates a car is stolen every 24 minutes.

The best deterrent of all, however, is buying the kind of car that thieves tend not to steal, especially something like the Volvo V70 (the claim frequency is only 0.8 out of 1,000 per insured vehicle year). Nevertheless, if the V70 or any other car suddenly were to become attractive to thieves, auto experts say there is relatively little that a car owner can do to stop them. If professional thieves want a certain kind of car badly enough, they'll go to just about any lengths to get it.

"If a thief wants your car, they will load it on a flatbed," says Rader. They will either strip it for parts or head for coastal borders "where it will end up on a boat and be exported overseas."

Jacobsen Deal Completed

Everton have completed the signing of Lars Jacobsen.

A deal was agreed on Monday and Jacobsen underwent a medical at Finch Farm.

That procedure has now been completed and the Danish international is now an Everton player.

He will be eligible to play against Portmouth on Saturday, subject to Everton receiving his registration from the German FA.

Danish international Jacobsen spent last season at FC Nuremburg and has also played for Hamburg Odense and FC Copenhagen.

He will wear the number 15 jersey when playing for the Toffees.

Everton have today confirmed they are on the verge of their first signing of the summer after David Moyes agreed a deal to recruit Denmark international Lars Christian Jacobsen on a free transfer.

The news came on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon following discussions with Blues officials and the 28-year-old's advisers.

Jacobsen has been on Merseyside at Everton's Finch Farm headquarters and will sign a one-year agreement subject to finalising a medical examination on Tuesday morning.

A right-sided defender, Jacobsen spent last season at UEFA Cup opponents FC Nuremberg - making a total of seven appearances. However, he did not feature against the Toffees in the 2-0 victory.

He started his career at Odense in 1996, making a total of 112 appearances before making his first move to the Bundesliga with SV Hamburg.

Sandwiched between his spells in Germany was a three year period at FC Copenhagen where he gained valuable experience in the Champions League and helped his side to the Danish Superliga in 2003–04, 2005-06 and 2006–07.

Jacobsen has been his country's first choice at right back since 2006 but has missed out on the World Cup and Euro 2008 tournaments after Denmark failed to qualify.

Difahamkan, menjadi trend dan gaya terkini pembonceng motosikal terutama golongan muda memakai topi keledar berkenaan manakala orang dewasa pula menggunakannya kerana sifatnya yang ringan.

Seorang guru, Shauki Ariffin, 35, berkata dia gemar memakai topi keledar separuh kerana lebih ringan berbanding topi keledar yang lain.

“Saya tahu ia tidak diluluskan Sirim Berhad (Sirim), tetapi kenapa pihak berkuasa benarkan topi itu dijual.

“Saya yakin selagi topi keledar itu berada di pasaran ia tetap akan menjadi pilihan pengguna,” katanya.

Shauki berkata, sekiranya topi itu tidak diluluskan kenapa kebenaran menjualnya diberikan kepada pihak kilang dan pengeluar.

Tinjauan Harian Metro di beberapa premis yang menjual topi keledar separuh itu mendapati ia menjadi pilihan golongan muda terutamanya Mat Rempit dan hanya segelintir orang dewasa yang memilih menggunakan topi keledar itu.

Malah, topi keledar berkenaan hanya dijual sekitar RM25 hingga RM28 menyebabkan ia menjadi pilihan golongan muda.

Bagaimanapun, terdapat juga pelbagai jenis topi keledar separuh yang dijual dengan harga yang mahal mencecah ratusan ringgit berdasarkan jenis dan trend terkini.

Sementara itu, Menteri Pengangkutan Datuk Ong Tee Keat, berkata penjualan topi keledar kura-kura mungkin diharamkan kerana tidak menjamin keselamatan penunggang dan pembonceng motosikal.

“Ramai penunggang masih tidak sedar mengenai wujudnya penguatkuasaan larangan memakai topi keledar berkenaan.

“Penunggang perlu peka tentang larangan tersebut dan berhenti membeli serta menggunakan topi keledar berkenaan walaupun ia ada dijual di pasaran.

“Kita sedang usahakan rundingan dan penyelarasan dengan agensi yang terlibat mengenai penjualannya,” katanya selepas menyaksikan majlis menandatangani memorandum persefahaman (MoU) Kempen Kemalangan Sifar antara Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya dan Plus Expressway Berhad (Plus) di sini, baru-baru ini.

Menurutnya, dari Januari hingga Julai tahun ini jumlah kematian akibat kemalangan jalan raya meningkat tujuh peratus iaitu 3,814 kes berbanding 3,564 kes pada tempoh yang sama tahun lepas.

Looks like Avril Lavigne can prove she's "The Best Damn Thing" in Kuala Lumpur after all.

The Malaysian government has given the go-ahead for the wannabe punk rocker's gig on Aug. 29 as scheduled, despite scrapping the concert last week for being "too sexy."

The decision was reversed after Lavigne's promoters assured the performance wouldn't corrupt the mainly Muslim country's youth or disrupt its independence day celebration on Aug. 31.

"In giving the approval, the cabinet also instructed the [arts and cultural] ministry to monitor the concert to ensure that the performances do not clash with the Malaysian culture and values," the Arts and Culture Minister Mohamad Shafie Apdal told Bernama, a Malaysian news agency.

Beyoncé Knowles, Gwen Stefani and the Pussycat Dolls are among the other artists who have experienced trouble in the conservative country, which imposes dress rules and conduct codes on performers, including no jumping, shouting, hugging or kissing onstage.

But the 23-year-old "Complicated" singer told MTV, "They tend to, you know, sometimes not want Western artists in their country," she continued. "I respect that, but at the same time, you know, there's people that listen to music there and want to see their idols and stuff, so it's all good: been approved by the government and [I'm] going to go put on a show and have fun."

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia on Tuesday canceled a concert by Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne, saying it may taint the Muslim-majority country's independence day celebrations after the Islamic opposition slammed her show as being "too sexy."

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry said it had decided not to permit Lavigne's show because it was unsuitable to Malaysian culture and could not be held on Aug. 29, two days ahead of independence day.

"It is not timely. It's not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for," said Shukran Ibrahim, a senior official from the culture ministry's department that vets all foreign artists.

The decision came after the youth wing of a fundamentalist opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, called for the show's cancellation.

Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party youth official, told The Associated Press on Monday that Lavigne's show was "considered too sexy for us" and would promote the wrong values just before independence day.

"We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models," he said.

Lavigne, who became famous with her 2002 debut album "Let's Go," had planned to launch her monthlong Asia tour in Kuala Lumpur.

The show's promoter, Galaxy Group, can request a new date for the concert, which will be considered by the ministry, Shukran said. Galaxy officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Galaxy began advertising the Grammy-nominated rock singer's concert this month even though it had yet to obtain a government permit, which is mandatory for all foreign music shows. It said Monday about half the concert tickets had been sold.

Last year, R&B singer Beyonce moved her show from Malaysia to Indonesia, and Christina Aguilera skipped the country on an Asian tour after a controversy erupted over a dress code for foreign artists.

Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from the chest to the knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.

Still, members of PAS and other conservative Muslims often protest against Western and even Malaysian music shows that they deem to be inappropriate.

The local organizer of a Pussycat Dolls concert in 2006 was fined 10,000 ringgit (US$2,857) after the U.S. girl group was accused of flouting decency regulations.

Everton have opened the 2008/09 campaign with a defeat - losing out in second half injury time when it seemed a draw was assured.

It was a bitter way to end the game on the day Goodison witnessed a slice of history.

With 13 minutes of the game remaining attacking midfielder Jose Baxter came onto the field. At just 16 years and 191 days he became the youngest player to represent the side in a competitive league game.

And he did his best to complete the fairy tale, coming within inches of snatching a winning goal a minute from the end of normal time.

The spoils should have been shared on a day when the contest see-sawed between the two sides. Blackburn took the lead through David Dunn, Mikel Arteta equalised with a cracking free-kick, Yakubu then put the Blues ahead.

A Roque Santa Cruz equaliser looked to have dashed hopes of an opening day victory. But then came the real killer blow, Ooijer turning the ball in after the first effort had hit the base of Tim Howard's post.

It was a cruel end to a nerve-wracking day at Goodison.

The first shot of any note came inside four minutes - from the boot of youngster Jack Rodwell. Paul Robinson had to gather it at the second time of asking.

The hero almost turned villain moments later when a wayward pass was picked up by Morten Gamst Pedersen. His shot was deflected wide.

Roque Santa Cruz then headed wide as the match opened at a good pace. It was an early warning that was followed by another headed effort from the striker in the 13th minute that went over the bar.

At the other end, Robinson had to act quickly to divert a deflected Leon Osman cross over the bar and Nuno Valente blasted over from the edge of the area.

The deadlock was broken in the 23rd minute, David Dunn stealing the ball on the edge of the area and producing an impressive left-footed strike that left Howard with no chance.

Moyes shuffled things around after the goal, switching Valente from left-back to left-midfield, with Baines moving in the opposite direction. And on 40 minutes Everton went close to levelling when a Mikel Arteta free-kick sailed inches over the bar.

Another Rodwell drive on the stroke of the interval was deflected behind from a corner. And during that period of pressure the equaliser materialised, Arteta sending in a sublime free-kick from wide on the left that left Robinson with no chance.

There was barely chance to kick-off before the half-time whistle blew.

Everton started brightly in the second period, with a tantalising cross from Baines inches from being turned in by Yakubu.

At the other end, a bold run by Jason Roberts was eventually halted by a decent save from Howard.

Yakubu found the target in the 66th minute, heading in powerfully at the back post from an Arteta centre.

But the lead lasted just a minute - with some poor defending allowing Santa Cruz with the opportunity to latch onto a long ball from Stephen Warnock before sliding his shot under Howard.

Moyes stood on the touchline with his head in his hands as Lescott remonstrated with the assistant referee claiming an offside should have been awarded.

The arrival of 16-year-old Jose Baxter for his Premier League debut provided a spark for the crowd and the team alike with 11 minutes of the contest remaining.

He became the youngest player to play for the first-team - beating James Vaughan's record by 80 days. And he also beat the hitman's record as the Club's youngest ever goalscorer nine minutes later, heading over at the back post from a Phil Jagielka centre.

It would have been a dream for the youngster - but his place in Everton history books remains secure anyway.

He will look back on the game with bitter-sweet memories though, thanks to Andre Ooijer's injury-time strike that consigned Everton to a morale-sapping defeat.

MATCH REPORT : MALAYSIAN XI 0 CHELSEA 2

Chelsea made it 13 goals with none conceded in the pre-season tour as the Malaysians supplied the sternest test yet.

Nine months into their season, the pick of the nation's Under 23 talent plus a couple of old-hands proved capable of doing what the Chengdu Blades couldn't - making Chelsea defenders chase and the keepers save - and it took Cech to be at his best to keep out one second-half break.

The Blues goals came in each half, Nicolas Anelka continuing his good vein of form with the first and Ashley Cole netting the second from close range.

Felipe Scolari opted for a 4-3-3 starting line-up for the second game running although the full-backs were changed.

Michael Essien and Wayne Bridge, beginning his first game of pre-season were those chosen. Mikel was restored to play behind Deco and Lampard and Joe Cole was a natural replacement for Olympic-bound Salomon Kalou on the left of the front three.

Andriy Shevchenko and newly-arrived Scott Sinclair were on the bench for the first time.

The evening temperature for the kick-off was as warm as any on the tour - and that means hot, with a high humidity also, and the Kuala Lumpur fans had turned out in force to noisily enjoy the occasion. It was by far the biggest crowd of the tour so far.

They were almost given a shock as Chelsea came within a whisker of going behind with only two minutes on the clock.

Maybe the pitch, which was patchy and cutting up, played a part but a retreating Bridge, watching a crossfield pass as the ball bounced up, missed his header and was left trailing as Amirulhadi raced away and shot strongly, only to see it skim past outside of the post.

Chelsea began to steady the ship. Deco and Joe Cole combined sublimely, but Lampard couldn't bring a pass under control in time to shoot. Wright-Phillips then went on a run past two defenders but his shot was blocked at source by Aidil.

Chelsea immediately won a free-kick out wide and from Lampard's delivery, Deco produced the moment of skill of the Asia visit, thumping a volley away with power from approaching 30 yards. The keeper saved hurriedly.

Helmi, the Malaysian goalie, was in action again within seconds, blocking from Anelka but when the Frenchman's follow-up found Wright-Phillips in space, he stabbed his shot well, well over.

The Malaysian side were clearly a set-up from the Chinese teams, especially down the right where the pace of Hairuddin, a scorer against Chelsea five years ago, was capable of stretching the defence.

Chelsea too, however, were capable of breaking with pace - and that's what we did with 25 minutes on the clock for the game's first goal.

Before the break, Malaysia threatened again on a couple of occasions with Amirulhadi, the same midfielder who nearly opened the scoring early on, shooting just past the same post.

Essien was having little problem getting forward from full-back but when he gave a pass and cut inside for the return from Cole, it was his accuracy that let him down with the first-half's final effort.

As the pre-season progresses, more players are being pushed beyond 45 minutes and Alex for Carvalho, Malouda for Wright-Phillips, Ashley Cole for Bridge and Ferreira for Joe Cole (Essien moving into midfield) were the half-time changes but it has to be said the start to the second half was sloppy by Chelsea with too many wayward passes.

A second goal second steadied the ship and two subs were involved. Malouda crossed and although the ball was half-cleared, Lampard found an advanced Ashley Cole for a crisp turn and finish.

Alex unleashed a free-kick rocket that was deflected over before Cech was at his very best - racing out to stop Zaquan's shot with his feet after the Malaysian side had played the ball behind the Blue backline.

Next up to show his defensive mettle was Ferreira with a lung-busting run to make a block as the home side were breaking through.

Shevchenko was introduced with just over 20 minutes remaining, to play with Di Santo but was Essien who had a good chance to add the third but the keeper saved well.

The Nigerian FA have urged the kidnappers of the elder brother of Everton defender Joseph Yobo to release him immediately.

Norum Yobo was snatched from his car at gunpoint along with two other men in the early hours of Saturday morning as he made his way home from a nightclub in Port Harcourt, in the Rivers State province.

The two other men, identified as Barry C Lakara and Ifeanyi Nwa, have since been released but Yobo is still being held - it is thought because of his brother's high profile - and the NFA has call for his instant release.

"We are calling on whoever might be behind this to release Yobo's brother promptly without any harm," NFA spokesman Ademola Olajire told newspaper This Day. "We're not happy about it at all."

The NFA have yet to make contact with Joseph Yobo, but are hoping their plea to the kidnappers will help fix the situation.

Olajire added: "This will definitely affect our vice captain. Although we've not been able to reach him our thoughts and prayers are with him and the rest of the family through these very trying and difficult moments."

Torres ends Spain's long wait for glory

Spain became European champions for the second time after Fernando Torres's first-half goal in Vienna proved enough to defeat Germany in the final of UEFA EURO 2008™.

History an inspiration
Spain had won their only previous piece of silverware in this competition in 1964 and had not been beyond the quarter-finals of any tournament in 24 years, yet Luis Aragonés's men chose to use that history as an inspiration rather than a burden. After a strong start from Germany, seeking a fourth title themselves, Spain were the more dangerous side throughout an entertaining final at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion although it took just one goal – in the 33rd minute, courtesy of Torres's pace, perseverance and unerring finish – to end their long wait.

Ballack boost
Germany received a significant boost before kick-off with captain Michael Ballack included despite a much-publicised calf problem, and, perhaps buoyed by that news, Joachim Löw's team settled quickly. Much had been made of the contrast in style between the sides yet in the opening exchanges it was Germany whose passing looked crisper, Miroslav Klose and Thomas Hitzlsperger failing to make the most of glimpses of goal. Meanwhile Spain, shorn of four-goal leading scorer David Villa due to a thigh injury, struggled to find their feet in a new 4-5-1 formation in which Cesc Fàbregas was rewarded for a fine semi-final display with a starting place.

Instinctive stop
As an indicator of the pattern of the match, however, Germany's bright beginning proved misleading. Spain soon worked their way into the contest, with Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann – becoming, at 38, the oldest player to appear in a UEFA European Championship final – forced into action for the first time in the 14th minute. Although his instinctive save came when his own defender, Christoph Metzelder, inadvertently deflected Andrés Iniesta's cross towards his own goal, Xavi Hernández's fine through pass had unpicked the Germany defence and showed the Spanish were finding their feet.

Torres on target
Right-back Sergio Ramos was then allowed to cut inside and deliver a deep cross, Torres peeling away from Per Mertesacker to create space for the header only for the right-hand post to come to Lehmann's rescue. The warning signs were there for Germany, yet they failed to heed them and duly fell behind three minutes past the half-hour. Again Xavi was the architect, playing a pass in behind the Germany back line towards Torres, who outmuscled a hesitant Philipp Lahm and clipped the ball over the diving Lehmann and just inside the far post. David Silva then volleyed over Iniesta's cross when given time and space inside the area as Spain threatened to increase their lead.

Spain openings
Spain had more openings in the early stages of the second half, Lehmann getting the merest of touches to Xavi's low shot before Ramos nearly guided in Silva's drive from the resulting corner. Yet a hint of the threat Germany still posed arrived on the hour, substitute Marcell Jansen and Bastian Schweinsteiger combining for Ballack to shoot centimetres wide. Klose then deflected a Schweinsteiger effort past the post and, in response to Germany's renewed menace, Spain coach Aragonés promptly introduced Xabi Alonso and Santi Cazorla in place of Fàbregas and Silva. The switches reinvigorated Spain instantly, Lehmann making smart stops from Ramos and Iniesta while Torsten Frings blocked another Iniesta effort on the line.

Celebrations
As the final moved into the last 20 minutes, Spain had had seven shots on goal to Germany's one, but with the Mannschaft having turned virtually one in two of their attempts on target into goals en route to the final, that would have been scant consolation to Aragonés and his side. In the event, however, it was Spain who continued to carve out chances as the match reached its conclusion, Marcos Senna narrowly failing to apply the finishing touch to an unselfish header from substitute Daniel Güiza – but the celebrations would not be delayed much longer.

America's Got Talent is an American reality television series on the NBC television network. It is a talent show that features singers, dancers, magicians, comedians and other performers of all ages competing for the advertised top prize of US$1 million. The show debuted in June 2006 for the summer television season.

The show concept can be traced back to the British talent contest Opportunity Knocks, which started as a radio program in 1949 before moving to television in 1956. Among its significant features were that it gave an opportunity to talented amateurs or unknown performers, with the results decided by a public vote.

What is Cake?

Cake is a framework for PHP in the same way that Rails is for Ruby. Essentially, it's a tool designed to help PHP developers avoid reinventing the wheel all the time.

Is Cake for me?

Cake is for you if:

you like the cleverness and automation of Ruby on Rails
you already know PHP and don't have time to learn another language
you are tired of creating bespoke code to do very similar things
you use shared hosting
you want to get more done in less time
you want to use templating
you want nice, searchable URLs - not things like post.php?id=12345678
you don't want to run things from the command-line
you only have one MySQL database (table prefixing is an option)

Is Cake better/worse than Rails?

Cake follows the same MVC model that other frameworks typically use, and I think it's fair to say that the developers were initially inspired by Rails. However, because Ruby is different to PHP, I don't think the two frameworks can be directly compared.

The way I look at it, Rails is a great idea, but to use it you need to learn a new language and have specialised hosting.

On the other hand, with Cake you can stay in familiar territory (PHP) and use pretty much any host while enjoying the benefits of a frameworked approach.

What will Cake do for me?

Some of the things Cake does so you don’t have to:

eases creation of standard content management functionality (adding, editing and deleting)
uses template-like Layouts and Views to separate logic from presentation
validates form fields
automatically escapes data saved to the database (to prevent SQL injection attacks)
includes callbacks (eg do an action before or after save)
allows for both test and production databases

What do I need to run Cake?

Any hosting package with Apache, PHP 4.3.2 or higher and MySQL. If mod_rewrite is enabled it will allow you to use nice, search-friendly URLS. Cake does run on IIS too.

Can I install Cake myself?

Yes, as long as you can FTP to your webspace. You can get Cake running without any configuration changes from your host.

Will I need to run things from the command-line?

No.

What is scaffolding and does Cake do it?

Essentially, scaffolding means running a script over your database structure to automatically create some basic content management functionality (ie web forms). And yes, Cake does do scaffolding. See my scaffolding tutorial for more info.

What about Ajax?

Yes, Cake includes Ajax functions too. My Ajax task list tutorial is an introduction to Cake with Ajax.

How do I use CSS, Javascript and other stuff with Cake?

You can store all your non-Cake files (css, javascript, images, etc) in a separate folder.

Football Manager is a series of football management simulation games first released in 1982 by Addictive Games, and lasting until the mid 1990s. In 2004, the series was revived by Sports Interactive to replace the name of their Championship Manager series. The original series competes with League Division One (publisher Qualsoft) as being the first ever computer game to use the concept of managing a football team. Football Manager 2008 is the latest in the series.

Oil Price

The price of crude oil has increased by 400 percent in the last three years. It follows that the price of products must increase, sooner or later. In other countries petrol prices had already increased. In the United Kingdom one litre of petrol sells for more than one pound sterling or RM7. In the United States it is about RM5.

That the price in neighbouring countries has gone up is shown by the rush to fill up by Thai and to a lesser extent Singapore vehicles.

The Government has now announced an increase in petrol price by 78 sen to RM2.70 per litre, an increase of more than 40 per cent.

I may be mistaken but there seems to be less vehicles on the road today. But obviously that is not all that will happen. All other consumer goods, services and luxury goods would increase in price.

The cost of living must go up. Put another way there will be inflation and the standard of living will go down.

Obviously our increase in petrol price is far less than in the United Kingdom or the United States. But our per capita income is about one-third of theirs. In purchasing power terms our increase is more than in the UK or the US.

The increase hurts but the pain is greater not just because of the increase percentage-wise is higher than in developed countries but because of the manner the increase is made.

A few days ago the Government decided to ban sale of petrol to foreign cars. It flipped. Now foreign cars can buy again. Flopped.

Knowing that in a few days it was going to raise the price and foreigners would be allowed to buy, why cannot the Government just wait instead of banning and unbanning.

But be that as it may what could the Government have done to lessen the burden on the people that results from the increase in petrol price.

In the first place the Government should not have floated the Ringgit. A floating rate creates uncertainties and we cannot gain anything from the strengthened Ringgit. Certainly the people have not experienced any increase in their purchasing power because of the appreciation in the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Ringgit.

Actually the Ringgit has increased by about 80 sen (from RM3.80 to RM3.08 to 1 US Dollar) per US Dollar, i.e. by more than 20 per cent. Had the Government retained the fixed rate system and increased the value of the Ringgit, say 10 per cent at a time, the cost of imports, in Ringgit terms can be monitored and reduced by 10 per cent. At 20 per cent appreciation the cost of imports should decrease by 20 per cent. But we know the prices of imported goods or services have not decreased at all. This means we are paying 20 per cent higher for our imports including the raw material and components for our industries.

Since oil prices are fixed in US Dollar, the increase in US Dollar prices of oil should also be mitigated by 20 per cent in Malaysian Ringgit.

But the Government wants to please the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and decided to float the Ringgit. As a result the strengthening of the Ringgit merely increased our cost of exports without giving our people the benefit of lower cost of imports.

This is not wisdom after the event. I had actually told a Government Minister not to float the Ringgit three years ago. But of course I am not an expert, certainly I know little about the international financial regimes.

I believe the people expect the increase of petrol price. But what they are angry about is the quantum and the suddenness. The Prime Minister was hinting at August but suddenly it came two months earlier, just after the ban on sale of petrol to foreigners.

If the increase had been more gradual, the people would not feel it so much. But of course this means that the Government would have to subsidise, though to a decreasing extent.

Can the Government subsidise? I am the “adviser” to Petronas but I know very little about it beyond what is published in its accounts. What I do know may not be very accurate but should be sufficient for me to draw certain conclusions.

Roughly Malaysia produces 650,000 barrels of crude per day. We consume 400,000 barrels leaving 250,000 barrels to be exported.

Three years ago the selling price of crude was about USD30 per barrel. Today it is USD130 – an increase of USD100. There is hardly any increase in the production cost so that the extra USD100 can be considered as pure profit.

Our 250,000 barrels of export should earn us 250,000 x 100 x 365 x 3 = RM27,375,000,000 (twenty seven billion Ringgit).

But Petronas made a profit of well over RM70 billion, all of which belong to the Government.

By all accounts the Government is flushed with money.

But besides petrol the prices of palm oil, rubber and tin have also increased by about 400 per cent. Plantation companies and banks now earn as much as RM3 billion in profits each. Taxes paid by them must have also increased greatly.

I feel sure that maintaining the subsidy and gradually decreasing it would not hurt the Government finances.

In the medium term ways and means must be found to reduce wasteful consumption and increase income. We may not be able to fix the minimum wage at a high level but certainly we can improve the minimum wage.

Actually our wages are high compared to some of our neighbours. The investors who come here are attracted not by cheap labour but by other factors, among which is the attitude of the Government towards the business community and the investors in particular.

From what I hear business friendliness is wanting in the present Government – so much so that even Malaysians are investing in other countries. There are rumblings about political affiliations influencing decisions. Generally Government politicians are said to be arrogant.

Malaysia is short of manpower. The labour intensive industries are not benefiting Malaysians. Foreign workers are remitting huge sums of money home.

The industrial policy must change so that high tech is promoted in order to give Malaysians higher wages to cope with rising costs of living.

The world is facing economic turmoil due to the depreciation of the US Dollar, the sub-prime loan crisis, rising oil and raw material prices, food shortages and the continued activities of the greedy hedge funds. The possibility of a US recession is real. In a way the US is already in recession. The world economy will be dragged down by it.

Malaysia will be affected by all these problems. I wonder whether the Government is prepared for this.

We cannot avoid all the negative effects but there must be ways to mitigate against them and to lessen the burden that must be borne by all Malaysians. I am sure the Government will not just pass all these problems to the people as the review of oil prices every month seem to suggest.

AirAsia boss: Let us compete against MAS

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia has hit out at Malaysia Airlines for competing directly with its business model but at the same time not allowing the budget carrier to compete against the national airline.

AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said that while he welcomes competition, he urged that his company be allowed to compete against MAS.

“The first thing they should do is to allow us to fly more flights to Singapore instead of asking the Government not to allow us to do so. They should also allow us to stage more flights from different points in Malaysia to Singapore,” said Fernandes.

He was responding to a statement by MAS managing director Datuk Seri Idris Jala who said the national carrier was creating new demand from low fares, just like AirAsia.

He said MAS should work together with AirAsia instead of competing and accused the full service airline of “surrendering” to Singapore Airlines (SIA).

“MAS and AirAsia will go to war and the only beneficiary will be SIA,” said Fernandes.

“AirAsia and AirAsia X are doing more to bring in foreign tourists than MAS. Although we have only a flight a day to Australia (Gold Coast), we are spending A$350,000 in advertising compared to SIA’s A$1.2mil (RM3.6mil). I know MAS is spending a lot less.

“Our two airlines are dedicated to turn KLIA into a major Asian hub again. MAS should join us in this mission,” he added.

AirAsia's response to statement by MAS Union, 5th June 08

In response to the article “Stop Pressuring Govt, MAS Union tells AirAsia” which was published in the STAR on Thursday 5th June 2008, the 5,000 AirAsia staff comments:

We, the staff and employees of AirAsia Bhd., would like to respond to the statement by the Malaysia Airlines Employees Union as reported in the media today (Thursday, June 5, 2008).

We are deeply hurt and bitterly disappointed by the remarks attributed to MAS Employees Union executive secretary Mustafar Maarof. The remarks indicate either a fundamental lack of knowledge about how the free market works or – and we trust this is not so – a deliberate attempt at obfuscating the facts of the case. At a time when the challenges faced by our respective airlines – and their management and staff – grow exponentially day by day, we would hope that all airline employees in Malaysia would focus on helping their respective companies overcome these great hurdles rather than waste time, resources and energy in undermining these efforts.

Encik Mustafar says AirAsia should stop “pressuring the Government” to allow it to operate from Subang airport or turn it into a low-cost hub and that AirAsia should also “not push for more flights on the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore route.”

We are not sure where Encik Mustafar gets the idea from that AirAsia is “pressuring the Government” on these issues. He appears to be unaware of the fact that the Government of Malaysia has declared both AirAsia and MAS “national champions” of the nation’s airline industry and challenged them both to elevate their efforts to put Malaysia on the global aviation map. It’s a challenge we at AirAsia have embraced fully. We have amply demonstrated that we at AirAsia are capable of meeting these national expectations despite not being allowed to compete on a level playing field. It is not “pressure” but simple fairness that the Government, in turn, do its utmost to enable AirAsia to perform at its ultimate capability. Doing so can only help AirAsia generate even more economic revenue and employment in Malaysia’s tourism industry, which is one of the main, and increasingly important, revenue streams for the nation. Unlike MAS, AirAsia is not a government linked company but a private firm, founded and operating under its own steam and in a free market environment.

For Encik Mustafar’s information, AirAsia’s entry into a particular route has not resulted in “heated and uncontrolled competition among local airlines, which could ultimately force local airlines to contemplate closure.” On the contrary, every single analysis has demonstrated that AirAsia’s launch of a particular route has helped grow the market in that sector. Encik Mustafar needs only to check with his own airline’s management to confirm this basic fact. Just look at the load factor for MAS on its routes to Bangkok and Jakarta, for example, prior to and after the launch of AirAsia’s own aircraft on these routes.

In essence, AirAsia and MAS operate in two different markets on any particular sector – one is a full-service, legacy carrier; the other a budget carrier that in six short years has become the largest low-cost carrier in the region thanks to innovative pricing, marketing and route planning – and the diligence of its employees. That it is MAS which has now ventured into AirAsia’s market by launching its own “budget” fares appears to have escaped Encik Mustafar’s attention. And given that MAS now appears unable to settle on its own identity – whether to focus on being a full-service carrier challenging the likes of Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airlines, etc. or become a low-cost carrier – is an issue for the MAS management and its employees union to deal with. As for us at AirAsia, we have publicly stated that we welcome the competition – that is essentially our creed – but we would hope that the Government provides a level playing field so as to ensure that the competition is fair and conducted in a regulated environment that can benefit all stakeholders – the management and employees of both airlines and, most important, the Malaysian consumers – at a time of rising economic uncertainty.

Encik Mustafar alludes to the Malaysian Government’s proposed plan to build “a more comfortable and bigger Low-Cost Carrier Terminal which would cost some RM 1 billion.” He is perhaps unaware that AirAsia has counter-proposed to the Government that the airline is more than prepared to build its own LCCT, at no cost to the Government and without even a single sen in subsidy. We believe that at this time when public funds can be better utilized in helping the rakyat, our proposal is fully merited.

These are the facts, and they are publicly available to Encik Mustrafar and his like-minded colleagues at the MAS Employees Union. If, however, he requires further clarification, we at AirAsia would be more than happy to help him in this goal. Come over and visit us at any time to enjoy our hospitality and our camaraderie as fellow concerned workers of the airline industry. Like you, we, too, are worried about the developments in the industry and our own employment security. We are, however, fully confident in the capability of our senior management to chart a course for us through these darkening skies and lead us to a bright future. We strongly believe that the Malaysian Government shares our confidence and will take the necessary steps to allow us to compete in free and fair manner.

Portugal no match for German power show

Germany progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship for the first time since 1996 as goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack secured a 3-2 victory over Portugal in Basel.

Heads, you win
The Mannschaft ended up lifting the Henri Delaunay trophy that year and the way they raised their game to meet the challenge of a Portugal side that refused to lie down – halving a two-goal deficit twice through first Nuno Gomes and then, in the dying minutes, Hélder Postiga – augurs well for Joachim Löw's team. By contrast, it was a night when the worst fears of Portugal's Chelsea FC-bound coach Luiz Felipe Scolari were realised, his pre-match nightmares about Germany's aerial superiority materialising in the form of headed goals by Klose and Ballack. Portugal were semi-finalists in 2000 and runners-up in 2004 and Scolari had hoped to take that final step at UEFA EURO 2008™ but his farewell party fell flat at St. Jakob-Park, where Portugal were overpowered by opponents who shrugged aside impressively their occasional first-stage torpor.

Debt paid
With Simão probing down the right, Scolari's men appeared to be finding their stride as they offered the first threat on goal when Bosingwa crossed and João Moutinho, free of his marker but seemingly caught in two minds, steered the ball over at the near post with his knee. Yet in the 22nd minute they fell behind. It was a wonderfully worked goal too, swift passing between Philipp Lahm, Ballack and Lukas Podolski advancing the ball down the left, with Podolski bursting clear to drive in a low cross which Schweinsteiger converted with a sliding finish. Schweinsteiger's coach Löw had told the midfielder he had a "debt" to his team-mates after his red card against Croatia and here, in his first start of the finals, he resembled a man on a mission.

Scoring feat
Scorer of two goals against Portugal at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Schweinsteiger was the architect of their second here too, drifting a free-kick into the Portugal box which Klose, ghosting clear of the red shirts, headed past Ricardo. Raul Meireles replaced the injured Moutinho and Portugal went in search of a lifeline. It came via captain Nuno Gomes five minutes before the break. Simão's crossfield ball sent Ronaldo racing clear of Per Mertesacker down the inside-left channel and though Jens Lehmann blocked his shot, Gomes was first to the rebound, striking first time into the net via the foot of Christoph Metzelder, defending desperately on the line. It was Gomes's sixth goal on the European stage over three tournaments – a scoring span only achieved by Jürgen Klinsmann, Thierry Henry and Vladimír Šmicer before him.

Tense finish
Ronaldo was a whisker away from an equaliser moments before half-time, flashing the ball past Lehmann yet just wide of the far post. Deco did find the net shortly after the interval but was in an offside position and the little midfielder then flicked on a Simão corner to set up Pepe, only for the defender to nod over. Ballack showed him how it should be done in the 61st minute when – to the displeasure of his future manager – he shrugged off Chelsea FC team-mate Paulo Ferreira and beat Ricardo to another Schweinsteiger free-kick to head home. Scolari sent on Nani and Postiga as Portugal chased the game and the pair combined to ensure a nervy finale when Postiga headed in from Nani's left-wing delivery but the glimmer of hope was soon extinguished.

We thought Germany would win their group and that by winning our group we wouldn't face them now but in the semi-finals. But they came second and we faced a team with tremendous quality, especially from free-kicks, and that decided the game. malam tadi aku on tv2, aku tgk drg tayang one of my favorites movie.... S.W.A.T
Movie ni dah lame, dalam 2003 dah tayang, erm..cerite dier memang best,
tagline citer ni Even cops dial 911 dah byk pelakon hebet2 mcm Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, LL Cool J and Michelle Rodriguez... erm..aku pasti korang dah pernah tgk kan...tap kalo korang tak suka, lantak korang lah!!!

Ni plot s.w.a.t :

The film begins with a hostage situation in Los Angeles (loosely based on the 1997 North Hollywood shootout). Officer Jim Street, a hot-shot cop from the Los Angeles Police Department and his S.W.A.T. Team are sent to stop a gang of robbers who have taken over a bank. His high-tempered partner and close friend Brian Gamble disobeys a direct order from their lieutenant, and purposely wounds a hostage in a non-vital area, (shoulder) to distract the robbers. Gamble and Street are demoted by Tom Fuller, the SWAT captain. Gamble quits following an argument with Fuller. Street is punished, taken off the S.W.A.T. team and sent to work in the "gun cage," where he looks after gear and weapons.

The Chief of Police calls on Sergeant Dan "Hondo" Harrelson to help re-organize the S.W.A.T. division. Hondo is transferred in, and soon puts together a diverse team, including himself, Street, Chris Sánchez, Deacon Kay, T.J. McCabe, and Michael Boxer.

Meanwhile, a drug lord by the name of Alex Montel kills his father and uncle for control of the family's crime empire. The L.A.P.D. stop Montel for a broken taillight, detain him, and eventually learn he is an international fugitive through Interpol. As they are transferring him, his associates, dressed as LAPD officers, assault the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department bus Montel is on in an attempt to free him. Hondo's S.W.A.T. team foils the assault. As Montel is being brought into the police station in front of a group of reporters, he yells to them “I will give one hundred million dollars to whoever gets me out of here.”

The L.A.P.D. makes plans to transfer Montel into federal custody. They plan to fly him away, but a mysterious attacker (later revealed to be Gamble) shoots down the helicopter. The police next send out a large convoy, which is attacked by gang members. It turns out to be a decoy, and Hondo's team has spirited Montel away in two S.U.V.s. However, T.J. has been plotting with Gamble, and the two succeed in taking Montel from the other officers. Hondo and the rest give chase, and there is a final fierce battle, Gamble's group against the S.W.A.T. team. Hondo's team is victorious. T.J. kills himself rather than be captured, and there is a vicious hand to hand fight between Street and Gamble, with Street emerging the eventual victor when he kicks Gamble under the wheels of a passing train. The S.W.A.T. team delivers Montel to a federal prison to await trial.

How did they perform in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying?
• Portugal lost only one game in Group A, the only section with eight teams, but had to endure a nervous finale before claiming their place in the finals as runners-up to Poland.
• After clinging on for a 1-1 draw with Finland with ten men in their opening game, Portugal won 3-0 against Azerbaijan but then lost 2-1 in Poland.

• With Finland knowing a win would likely see them qualify in Portugal's place, it was a tense affair, but a 0-0 draw sufficed for the home side, with Scolari saying: "I know we have to improve for the finals."

How did they perform in the 2006 FIFA World Cup?
• Advanced to their second successive FIFA World Cup finals by topping the standings in their qualifying round group ahead of Slovakia and Russia. Won nine and drew three of their 12 games in the qualifiers, winning all of their six games on home soil with 24 goals scored and two conceded.
• With 30 points from 12 outings, Portugal finished joint second with England (25 points from 10 matches) in terms of their average points per match ratio – 2.5 – with the Netherlands posting the best match average (2.67).
• Portugal enjoyed a successful campaign at the finals in Germany, finishing the tournament in fourth position.
• Group victories against Angola (1-0), Iran (2-0) and Mexico (2-1) were followed by the 1-0 second-round defeat of the Netherlands.
• Portugal made it to the semi-finals after a 3-1 penalty win against England but had their path halted by a 1-0 loss to France, before losing 3-1 in the third-place play-off to Germany.

• Beaten finalists, having also hosted the event. Portugal lost their opening and closing matches to Greece but won all their other matches in between.
• Bounced back from their opening match loss to Greece to defeat Russia (2-0) and Spain (1-0) to top the group standings. Overcame England in the quarter-finals on penalties after the sides shared a 2-2 draw and then beat the Netherlands 2-1 to claim their place in the final.
• Greek striker Angelos Charisteas' 57th-minute goal separated the sides at the Estádio da Luz in the final as Portugal failed to follow the example of Spain (1964), Italy (1968) and France (1984) in winning the competition on home soil.

What is their best performance in the UEFA European Championship?
• Portugal's best performance to date in the competition came in 2004 when they lost in the final to Greece. Prior to that, Portugal had appeared in two semi-finals where they lost on both occasions to France.
• The two sides met in 1984 where France won 3-2 in an extra-time thriller at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille before defeating Spain in the final.
• Sixteen years later, on this occasion at Brussels' Roi Baudouin stadium, France prevailed 2-1 against Portugal, again after extra time, before defeating Italy in the final four days later.
